Mining 101: Geology Matters
Geology is the study of the Earth and what it is made of. Geologists also study events that have changed and shaped the Earth over time. The concept of the rock cycle is used to explain the continuous changing of rocks from one type to another and back again. Tectonic activity combined with weathering and erosional processes result in the constant recycling of rocks.
The earth’s crust is made up of many different types of rocks, but the three main types of rock are sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous and are defined by their formation process. Geologists identify rocks based on the formation process, their physical properties, and what minerals it contains.
